How did I find this book?

I picked up The Complete Software Developer’s Career Guide on a whim. Without knowing anything about the Author and doing the most minimal amount of research. I was on the way to an interview, and a little nervous about it. For that reason I was looking for something to put me in the right frame of mind for a technical interview. I loaded up Audible (here is a free trial btw,use this link if you like my blog posts and want to send some support), searched for something like “Software development” and picked a book while sitting in the car. What I got was something that quickly drew me in. As i drove to the interview I listened to John explaining scenarios that that as an engineer were easy to relate to. This book had already started to serve it’s purpose.

What is this book about, and did it meet my expectations?

The short answer is yes!

This is a long book (20 hours) and none of it was boring to listen to. I am actively looking forward to listening to it again. John covers the gamut of things that you will encounter as a new or even grizzled software engineer.

John talks about a variety of things. This such as languages you should learn, how to decide what frameworks to focus on, interview questions, challenges you might encounter, and how to deal with difficult co-workers. The list goes on and on. While this book does stay pretty high level I think that this is where it actually shines. When listening to this book you might find that some of the topics go by pretty quickly. In my hours away from the book I found myself reflecting on the things I heard. It had me dreaming of what I could do, and how I could change the course of my life.

The Complete Software Developer’s Career Guide covers a wide range of topics. While it gives you enough action items to work with , it serves better to guide you down the road and then let’s you decide where to get off and really dig in. Don’t worry though! John does have a companion site that he references in this book often.  While I haven’t used John’s site very much, he does mention that he has expanded on the higher level topics there.  I want to stress that I am not saying that this book is lacking , it’s just that many of the topics John covers here could be whole books themselves! (Get on it John!)

What surprised me about this book?

First of all, I didn’t expect, the sections on improving yourself, or the tactics that you can use to build your profile and reputation. Furthermore, I did not expect that in addition to career advice, I would be getting encouragement to try things that I have often thought about and wished I was doing. (Like generating passive income) Most noteworthy though, is that while I have never been one to be drawn into the fluffy, self-help kind of stuff. John manages to strike a perfect balance between informative and motivating. This book resonated with me like nothing else that I have read.

As a result of listening to this book over the course of a month or two, I kept finding myself jotting notes and making little plans for things that I should be focusing on. By the time I finished the book, I was starting a blog, exploring teaching as a side project, coding every day, forcing myself to finally dedicate to learning how to touch type,  and encouraging myself to set limits and schedules for my life. I was quite surprised to find myself thinking about my five year plan. Reading this book has impacted me in tangible ways that haven’t worn off in the few months since I completed it.

Johns book has left such a lasting , positive impression on my and my life… and I am just getting started.

If you are in a rut, just starting out or looking for some motivation, go get this book right now. I hope it can do for you what it has done for me.
